Masquerade Massacre:

When things had been going so well, they suddenly turned so dismal. At the Midsummer Masquerade Ball the band decided to attack with the aide of students and faculty. A good number of the defending ball goers died or were severely injured as a result.

A news blurb from after the attack:

"In other news the Midsummer Masquerade ended in an attempted massacre. The creatures in the band that was playing took a break about half way through the dance and for seemingly no reason began to attack students. There was no earlier indication that anything might have been off according to students and faculty. The ministry has taken one band member into custody, the others escaped arrest.

There are rumors it may be the work of a well developed imperius curse and thus of a new villainous threat to the wizarding world. Nothing is definitive as of yet though and there are an equal amount of rumors saying it was simply because the band members were creatures and thus naturally inclined toward violence and it was the fault of Hogwarts to employ such 'vile beings' to entertain when they are known to be unpredictable and dangerous."

Closer to Home:

The media has just gotten wind of this newsflash - sometime late last week the Deputy Ministress of Magic herself was brutally attacked and severely injured by someone that the Ministry suspects of being the leader of the creatures linked with the Hogwarts Massacre and the death of Armand Felchorn, another Ministry official. It would seem he surprised her in the alley on her way home and she barely survived. When she apparated to St. Mungo's the nurses described her as "bloody from head to toe, pale, and in all other aspects looking like a corpse" - they were quite shocked.

When we attempted to interview the Deputy Ministress she refused to make a statement. Is the Ministry trying to cover something up or was she perhaps threatened to keep her mouth shut? We don't know, but this isn't the last you'll hear on this issue.
