Name: Kaylyn Newell
Nickname: Kay
Age: 14
Year: Fourth
House: Gryffindor
Appearance
Kaylyn is about 5'6" and is quite thin. She has brown hair to a bit past her shoulders, which is usually secured in a ponytail. Her eyes are blue and she's fairly pale, despite having spent a fair amount of time in the sun. Her facial features are delicate and very feminine.
Kaylyn typically dresses fairly plainly, opting for jeans over fancier skirts or dresses. Simple t-shirts, often covered by a sweatshirt, complete the outfit. On occasion, Kaylyn will "dress-up" a bit, putting on a modest length skirt (knee-length or longer) with a nice top, but only with good reason. She doesn't wear make-up, as she finds it a hassle that's not worth dealing with (and she hasn’t figured out how to do so without being able to see).
Kaylyn moves carefully, though not clumsily. She likes to know if someone else is in a room, what's going on, etc. before entering, and may appear hesitant.
Personality
Kaylyn is quite shy and is slow to warm up to people. She has a hard time trusting anyone because of past experiences- she has been burned before and isn't too keen on putting herself out there to be burned again. She usually talks rather quietly and is wary of sharing her opinion on a subject, though she almost always has one. She tends to bottle her emotions up inside, causing herself a lot of stress. This has also led to inopportune “breakdowns,” when the emotions she's been hiding finally break the surface.
Overall, Kaylyn is very cautious. She always tries to keep track of what is going on around her and is always on edge, waiting for danger to jump out at her. She's rather jumpy and anxious. People think she's strange because of this, and her fear tends to distance her even further from those who would befriend her.
Kaylyn tries hard to please people, but still wants to be unique. She wants friends, but wants them to be her friend because they like her, not because they feel sorry for her. Kaylyn is very reluctant to accept help from people, and she will almost never ask for help, preferring to do things on her own. She will ask for help, but usually only after she's in way over her head and can see no way out. She worries about inconveniencing others with her requests for help, and feels bad that she can't do everything on her own.
A good student, Kaylyn strives to understand everything teachers put in front of her. She works hard to learn all the materials, and usually picks up on things fairly quickly. When she doesn't grasp something quickly, however, she can get rather frustrated.
Kaylyn is a good listener and very empathetic. She is a good problem solver and can easily put herself in another's shoes. This makes her a prime target for friends looking for a mediator, though she doesn't usually mind. She actually enjoys the challenge of finding a compromise, but often exhausts herself doing so- she gets so caught up in the problems of others that she forgets to take care of her own.
Family
Parents: Gerald and Loretta Newell (both muggles)
Siblings: Melany (sister, older) and Nic (brother, younger)
History
Kaylyn was born the middle child of Gerald and Loretta Newell 16 years ago. She didn't always get along with her older sister, Melany, but was very close to her younger brother, Nic.
Kaylyn was a bit of a bookworm, preferring to stay inside rather than play outside with the other children in the neighborhood, so she became a bit of an outcast. School was also very important to her and she always did very well. She basked in the praise of teachers and didn’t mind helping the other students that didn’t catch on to things as quickly. Her parents were proud of her accomplishments and encouraged her to continue her studies.
When Kaylyn was 10, she began to wonder if she wasn’t a bit different from the other members of her family. Letters containing incomprehensible scribbling would appear on her windowsill overnight, and she would wake to curtains flapping in the breeze despite having locked the window before going to bed. Books unlike any she had ever seen soon followed, and she spent hours engrossed within their pages. In this way, she started her magic schooling, studying on her own. Afraid of what others might think, she kept the strange occurrences secret, hiding in her room with her books.
Eventually, curiosity got the better of her and Kaylyn showed the books and letters to her parents. Showing the items to her parents did nothing to explain their appearance. At first, her parents brushed it off as stress from school and told her to stop making things up and act like an adult. They soon realized it was a lot more than stress. Convinced that Kaylyn was suffering from some sort of mental disease, her parents arranged to have her sent to a hospital for treatment. Quite upset with the idea, Kaylyn ran out the front door onto the busy street and was hit by a car. Brain damage from the accident left her without her sight, though her other injuries healed with time. Fed-up with her parents' insistence that she receive help for her "problem," she left home three months ago, attempting to make it on her own. During her travels, an owl somehow found her, dropping a letter into her hands before taking off. She followed the instruction contained within the letter, arriving at Hogwarts just days after learning of its existence.
Throughout her short time at the school, Kaylyn has found explanations for what she observed at home. She is still adjusting, but has made some friends and is learning more everyday. She continues to study hard, intent on catching up with the other students her age. While many would consider the her start in the magical world- reading textbooks under the covers with a flashlight- a disadvantage, it has actually helped Kaylyn. Her determination and stubborn pride have pushed her to try harder and do her best, even through the hardships she has had to face.
Not long after her arrival at Hogwarts Kaylyn entered a class focusing on creatures in different areas within the magical world: Magical Habitats. The first lesson ended in a trip to the Forbidden Forest, which quickly turned into a disaster. Several of the inhabitants within the forest were none-to-happy to have students invading their territory. Among these creatures was the lycaness, Kira, who attacked both Kaylyn and her newfound friend, Charlie. The lycaness' bite changed Kaylyn, turning her into a lycan herself. The change has given the girl even more challenges to face, learning to control the new "powers" she has acquired.
