The front page of the daily prophet was covered in it's usual jumble of words, the stories written in all directions across the page, intermingled with pictures and advertisements for various magical cleaning products. When laid out properly, the two main stories on the cover read:
“Incompetence at the Ministry?”
This reporter recently visited the Ministry of Magic in order to determine what is being done to protect our children in the light of recent attacks, and made an appalling discovery. It appears as though the lower levels within the Ministry are too busy battling their own incompetency to be able to look into these matters; I even have it on good authority that they have people in their employ who know little more about what happens inside that building than whether or not the lift is working. It is also worrying that I was able to get to the Head of Magical Law Enforcement before anyone questioned what I was doing there, which begs the question that if security is that lax within the Ministry of Magic itself, then what hope do we have that they are protecting us elsewhere?
I was able to speak with the Head of Magical Law Enforcement, Mr Langston Rederick, and asked him questions that I hope will set minds at ease. “We do have a few very solid leads. This means that we are confident that the ministry will prevent any future incidents.” Mr Rederick commented when asked about the current investigations, “It is very important that people feel safe to go anywhere in England, and that is why we work around the clock to prevent attacks.”
“24/7 we have people on the street, undercover as well as seen is vital. I can not express how much importance we have on prevention. We have also installed some other precautions that I can fully support. However we also preserve your privacy too. Which is not something we want to invade. So it is important that your readers know that we are not only protecting their safety but also some personal freedoms we feel are important as well. We are even patrolling Muggle areas for activity too. No stone left unturned sort of speak.”
When asked about the other precautions, Mr Rederick was again unable to give specific details, but he did say “The Ministry is not afraid to look outside the box, and that we are not giving up on any one system or idea too soon.” While this could be a bad omen, that the Ministry is forced to resort to drastic, untested measures, I have faith that it is purely an unusual means for an unusual circumstance.
As for the rumours from Scotland, it seems that the Ministry is taking any information they receive seriously. While this particular matter is being dealt with by a different department, Mr Rederick assured me that it was being investigated, and that he had seen reports on their findings. Again he was unable to share details, and our interview was cut short by a pre-arranged meeting before I was able to learn any more, although it was stressed throughout that the Ministry is doing their best to preserve the public's safety and privacy in these trying times.
Mr Rederick himself seemed to know much that was going on, both inside his own department and out, which was reassuring. It seems as though the incompetence is kept to the lower ranks of the Ministry, but we can only hope that they are giving nothing truly important to oversee, as the Ministry itself could be placed in danger should that happen.
"Daily Prophet Exclusive: Creatures Claim Latest Victims!"
It appears that a group of creatures, believed to be members of the same group that attacked Hogwarts, have claimed more victims in a violent attack. The victims in question, three witches who have yet to be identified, are believed to have been investigating the attacks. Their bodies were found by a Daily Prophet photographer outside the muggle village of Bank in The New Forest in Hampshire. Their bodies were taken to St. Mungo's, where they will be kept pending their funeral.
Mrs. D Finchley, a resident of a nearby village, told us that the women had visited her days before they were found, and had asked her about the creatures living within the forest. The questions were regarding numbers, areas they frequented, and if there had been any disappearances in the nearby villages; all questions confirming that they were performing investigations. They had kept their identities a secret from her, so she was unable to put a name with the bodies.
A source inside the Ministry states that if the women were investigating the attacks, they were doing so independently of the Aurors; he also wished to remind the public that the creatures in question are extremely dangerous, and that if members of the public have any information regarding their activities to send an Owl to the Ministry and it will be acted on immediately and anonymously.
Full investigations into their deaths will be difficult, as they had been moved prior to being found by the photographer. While the ministry is taking this matter seriously, the witches were trespassing on the creatures' territories when they were attacked, so this could have been a defensive action, with their bodies left as a warning to others.
A photograph of the three bodies was attached to the article, the women were all in their late 20s to early 30s, had long brown hair, and looked similar enough that they had to be related to each other. The bodies were horribly mutilated, claw marks cut through their stomachs and sides, one had deep fang marks in her neck, and another had had her legs torn off. Their faces were left unharmed, making identification easy to those who knew them, and below the image was a request for information.
((OOC: The three witches in the second article are all sisters of another of my characters, Andrew Evans. Feel free to post here reacting to either story or use them in your own threads – or ignore them if you really want.))
